Trans Agulhas as tough as ever

PUBLISHED ON 28 DECEMBER 2013

The first stage of the 26th Trans Agulhas, described as the world's toughest and longest rubberduck race, started at Keurboomstrand on Saturday December 28 in near perfect conditions. True to its legendary status, eight teams failed to complete the first stage over 189km, mainly due to mechanical failure.

Thirty-four teams, including a team from Russia, entered this year's race, which spans over 702kms and five days.

Drama unfolded when the Rusgenot team of Dreyer van Niekerk and Floris de Kock rescued a girl that was swept into sea at Wildernis. The team had mechanical problems and couldn't complete the stage.

First over the finish line in Mossel Bay in a time of 02:59:33 was the First Road Emergency team of Dave Barnett and Tjaart Oosthuizen. They participate in the modified class. Second to finish was Peter Groenenstein and Nichol Parr (Valumax/Amigos/Excellparts), competing in the stock class. Third home was the pro stock class entry Team Nulandis (Stefan Lindeque and Tony Ingram).

The teams could enter one of four classes: the stock class; novice stock class, pro stock class and the modified class. To adhere to international standards, the standard and standard novice classes have been changed to stock and novice stock classes as from this year.

The top three positions in the four classes after day 1 are:
